The Music Program
The music program at Christopher Newport University is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music and offers courses in music education, history, theory, ear training, literature, pedagogy, performance, and conducting.

Professional instruction is available on all woodwind, brass, percussion, and string instruments as well as on piano, harpsichord, organ, and in voice, composition, jazz improvisation, and conducting. Music majors graduating with either the Bachelor of Music degree or the Bachelor of Arts degree in fine and performing arts with a concentration in music are encouraged to pursue graduate study, although some students prefer to enter their profession immediately after graduation. Music majors graduating with the Master of Arts in Teaching degree are well prepared to enter the field of music education.

Music Degrees Music and Theater Hall
The Bachelor of Music degree is the initial professional degree in music. Its primary emphasis is on the development of the skills and knowledge necessary to function as a teacher, performer, composer, and/or scholar.

The Bachelor of Arts degree in Fine and Performing Arts with a concentration in music provides a strong education in the liberal arts, irrespective of specific career aspirations. The concentration in music provides a fundamental knowledge of theory and history and the aural and performance skills necessary to understand the basic tenets of musicianship and scholarship.

The Master of Arts in Teaching degree with a concentration in either choral or instrumental music education provides the courses and experiences necessary to become a successful music educator.
